Babri anniversary: Uttar Pradesh peaceful

Peace prevailed in twin cities of Ayodhya and Faizabad and the rest of Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday with security forces maintaining extra vigil on the occasion of the eighth anniversary of the demolition of Babri mosque.

Life was normal and there was no report of any untoward incident from anywhere in the state, official sources said, adding that personnel of Rapid Action Force, PAC and police were deployed in strength in all sensitive areas to maintain order.

Muslims did not open their shops in Ayodhya following a call to observe the day as "Black Day."

Meanwhile, people are pouring in at 'Karsewak Puram' in Ayodhya to participate in a gathering organised by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad to observe the day as "Shaurya Diwas."

Senior VHP leaders, including Ashok Singhal and Praveen Bhai Togadia, arrived in Ayodhya last Tuesday night to take part in the gathering.

Tight security cover has been thrown in-and-around Gyanvapi mosque in Varanasi and Krishna Janamsthal in Mathura, the sources said.

In Lucknow, activists of the All India Muslim Majlis and All India Muslim Forum staged a sit-in outside the state assembly, while some Shiv Sena activists organised a havan.
