Oppn demands PM's resignation

Tara Shankar Sahay in New Delhi

The Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha were adjourned for the day after Opposition leaders demanded the resignation of Prime Minister A B Vajpayee and Union ministers L K Advani, Uma Bharati and M M Joshi.

The Congress leaders flashed a photograph of Bharati rejoicing after the demolition of the Babri Masjid on December 6, 1992 and shouted, ''Down with the PM'' and '' Yeh Sarkar Nahin Chalegi (This government will not last).''

They soon rushed to the well of the House and started shouting slogans against the government. Members from the treasury benches rushed too and shouted counter slogans like Desh Ka Neta Kaisa Ho, Atal Bihari Jaisa Ho.

Congress President Sonia Gandhi, however, sat silently with a copy of Bharati's photograph.

The prime minister had stated on Thursday that the Ram Temple could be constructed at the disputed site after an agreement was reached between Hindus and Muslims.

Lok Sabha Speaker G M C Balayogi appealed to ruling and Opposition party members to maintain normalcy in the house, but as no one was ready to listen, he adjourned the House.

This is the fifth consecutive day that the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha have been adjourned.
