NDA will abide by court verdict on Ayodhya

After speaking out their mind on the need for the prime minister to uphold his secular image, constituent parties of the National Democratic Alliance Sunday backed Atal Bihari Vajpayee and declared that the alliance government would abide by the Supreme Court verdict on the Ayodhya dispute.

An emergency meeting of the co-ordination committee of the NDA rejected the opposition demand for resignation of the three Union ministers charge-sheeted in the Babri Masjid demolition case and accused the opposition of adopting 'obstructionist tactics" to stall Parliament.

"The NDA expresses its full solidarity with and support to the leadership of Vajpayee," said a resolution adopted at the two-hour meeting convened to discuss the Ayodhya issue in the wake of the prime minister's remarks that the temple construction was an "unfinished agenda."

The resolution said: "The NDA sees no reason whatsoever for these three ministers to resign from their ministerial positions on an issue that has no bearing on their constitutional duties."

However, leaders of some NDA parties, including the Trinamul, spoke of the need for the prime minister to steer clear of the controversy keeping in view his secular image.

The resolution said: "NDA government is duty-bound to accept and implement the decision of the Supreme Court which is presently seized of the litigation over the title of the disputed land in Ayodhya."

Home Minister L K Advani and Human Resources Development Minister Murli Manohar Joshi, whose resignations have been demanded by the opposition, were not present at the meeting.
