US Ambassador calls on Advani

United States Ambassador to India Richard F Celeste on Monday called on Union Home Minister L K Advani and conveyed Washington's 'keen interest' in the peace initiative taken by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on Jammu and Kashmir.

Emerging from the 35-minute meeting, Celeste told reporters that US was 'very eager' to support the peace initiative and 'hopeful' of efforts in this direction.

Asked whether Washington felt that conditions were now conducive for resumption of Indo-Pak dialogue, stalled since the Kargil conflict last year, he said, "My government has been consistently encouraging dialogue between India and Pakistan on the whole range of issues."

Celeste said he had an opportunity to share with the home minister the US government's 'keen interest' in the initiative taken by Vajpayee in announcing an unilateral ceasefire in J&K as also know about Advani's evaluation of the whole situation.
