Ayodhya indictment was result of a 'movement': Advani

Union Home Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani, who was the main target of the Opposition attack on Ayodhya, said on Thursday that he regarded the chargesheet in the case a result of his participation in a "movement".

"I regard that as part of an action during the course of a movement," Advani told reporters after the Lok Sabha rejected an Opposition-sponsored motion demanding the resignation of three indicted ministers, including him.

He said that when he had tendered his resignation as leader of the Opposition as well as a member of the Lok Sabha in 1995 in the wake of the havala case, reporters had asked him why he had not resigned on the Babri Masjid demolition case.

"I had then told them that the Ayodhya case fell in a different category as it was a movement ... The prime minister had rejected this demand for resignation last year itself," he said.

Replying to questions, Advani said he would appear before the Justice M S Liberhan Commission, which has summoned him in connection with its inquiry into the demolition.
