AK-47 rifle, ammunition recovered from Red Fort

Our Correspondent in New Delhi

The Indian Army has recovered three magazines of an AK-47 rifle, 77 shells and 29 live rounds of ammunition from the Red Fort area, while the Delhi police has recovered a loaded AK- 47 rifle from Vijay Ghat, the samadhi of Lal Bahadur Shastri located close to the fort.

The recoveries were made during the ongoing combing operations in the Red Fort area after a daring militant attack Friday evening, in which three people were killed.

Officials said the army has constituted a court of inquiry and is also carrying out a joint inquiry with the Delhi police.

The army claimed that the two militants jumped the lower walls of Red Fort from the rear, close to the Ring Road. Eyewitnesses have told investigators that the militants were wearing trousers and jackets and carrying AK-47s.

Army also believes the claims of Lashkar-e-Tayiba in Srinagar that it masterminded the attack as it has been receiving "intercepts of attempts by LeT and other groups to step up fidayeen (suicide) attacks beyond J&K."

In fact, ever since the ceasefire in Jammu and Kashmir there have been several Intelligence Bureau, Research and Analysis Wing and Military Intelligence reports indicating that the militant groups would step up suicide attacks in their desperation to foil the peace initiative.

The court of Inquiry by the army, to be conducted under the overall supervision of General Officer Commanding, Delhi Area, "will cover all aspects of the attack, including the possibility of a security lapse," a spokesman said.
