Three crash survivors admitted to Delhi hospitals

Two of the seven survivors of the Alliance Air crash have been admitted to Apollo Hospital in a critical condition while another is being treated at the Intensive Care Unit of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi.

While P Bopanna, an official with the National Thermal Power Corporation, and Rajiv Rana were driven straight to Apollo Hospital on arrival at the Delhi airport on Monday night, another survivor Rohit Ranjan was admitted to the orthopaedic ICU of AIIMS.

AIIMS Medical Superintendent Dr R K Pandhi described the condition of 45-year-old Rohit, who has suffered multiple fractures on various parts of the body, as 'stable'. ''Rohit was operated upon on Monday night itself and is under observation at the moment,'' he said. ''We will keep him under observation for at least 24 hours before declaring him out of danger.''

Barring his relatives, Rohit was kept out of bounds of the hordes of mediapersons. He is also being treated for 20 per cent burns he suffered, Dr Pandhi said.

Both Bopanna and Rana have been diagnosed as having suffered fracture of the cervical spine, according to doctors treating them at Apollo. Bopanna has also suffered 40 per cent burns. Rana underwent an operation on Monday afternoon by a team of doctors headed by Dr Rajendra Prasad.

Dr Pandhi said AIIMS had been prepared to receive all the seven survivors of the crash. Bopanna and Rana were taken to Apollo by their relatives, he said. He said a team of doctors and three ambulances were sent to the airport to receive the remaining survivors, on Tuesday.

On the instructions of Civil Aviation Minister Sharad Yadav, two mobile ventilators were airlifted to Patna from Apollo Hospital as the four other victims were in a critical condition. They were also being flown to Delhi, accompanied by a team of AIIMS doctors who had been flown to Patna to monitor their progress.
