Jehad Council expels Hizbul-Mujahideen

The United Jehad Council - an alliance of several Kashmiri militant oufits - today expelled pro-Pakistan Hizbul-Mujaheeden from the group.

The decision came on Wednesday afternoon after Hizbul declared a unilateral cease-fire and said it was willing to hold talks with the Indian government.

In a statement issued from Muzaffarabad, Pakistan, the United Jehad Council Party expressed the hope that Hizbul would review its decision.

On Tuesday, Syed Salahuddin, the top leader of the Hizbul Mujahideen, had put his seal of approval on the cease-fire offer by his main commander in Jammu and Kashmir and had said that India must respond positively.

"I want to make it clear, the cease-fire offer is conditional," Salahuddin had said. "India should come forward now to negotiate with Pakistan, the All Party Hurriyat Conference and the Kashmiri leadership." Salahuddin had mentioned.
