One killed, 24 injured in UP train accidentSharat Pradhan in Lucknow The driver of the Mathura-Kasganj Passenger died on the spot and about two dozen passengers were injured when the train derailed near Kasganj in Etah district, central Uttar Pradesh, on Monday. According to information reaching the state headquarters here on Tuesday morning, loose fishplates caused the accident. The train, on its way to Kasganj from Mathura, was about five km from Kasganj station when the mishap occurred. As the engine jumped the rails, driver Vinit Kumar stepped out of his cabin to see what had happened. He was thrown overboard and got crushed under the engine. Co-driver Rajvir Yadav also rushed out and was thrown overboard. He escaped with grievous injuries. At least four coaches went off the rails, but the first two after the engine suffered maximum damage. Most of the injured were from the first coach that nearly collapsed over the engine. According to a senior railway official, "At least 200 metres of the track was completely damaged." Confirming the disruption in rail services, he said the tracks would be restored before Tuesday evening. He observed that the toll could have been higher in an accident of this nature.
