Bankara continues to be tenseRifat Jawaid in Calcutta The situation in the Bankara area of Howrah district in West Bengal continues to be tense more than 12 hours after a violent mob attacked police personnel and set several vehicles ablaze. Protesting against a letter published in Pratidin, a local eveninger, about the alleged involvement of former cricket captain Mohammad Azharuddin in match-fixing, the mob obstructed traffic and pelted stones injuring two sub-inspectors and five constables. District Magistrate, Howrah, Sunil Gupta, said section 144 has been clamped in Bankara. "The situation is tense, but under control. Two sections of special police force are patrolling the area. Besides, all top police officials, including the district superintendent of police and his deputy, are camping in the area," he added Bankara is a predominantly Muslim locality. Over 45 people have been arrested. Tutu Bose, the editor of Pratidin, has issued an apology.
