Uma Madhava Reddy joins Chandrababu Naidu ministry

Uma Madhava Reddy, widow of former minister A Madhava Reddy, was inducted into the Andhra Pradesh Cabinet by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Monday.

Governor Dr C Rangarajan administered the oath of office and secrecy to Uma Reddy in a brief ceremony at 0924 hours (IST) at the Raj Bhavan. The chief minister, his ministerial colleagues, Telugu Desam Party functionaries and senior officials were present on the occasion.

With the induction of Uma Reddy, the strength of the state cabinet goes up to 37 - the chief minister, 27 cabinet rank ministers and nine ministers of state - and the number of women ministers goes up to six.

Uma Reddy fills up the vacancy caused by the death of her husband and then panchayat raj minister A Madhava Reddy in a landmine blast triggered by the outlawed People's War Group of Naxalites at Ghatkesar on March 7 this year. Nalgonda district gets representation in the cabinet with her inclusion.

In the caste conscious state, Uma Reddy's induction pushes up the representation of the politically predominant Reddys to seven in the state cabinet.

The 46-year-old Uma joined politics after her husband's death. She contested her maiden election to the state assembly from Bhongir constituency on the Telugu Desam Party ticket in May this year. She scored an easy win in the by-poll defeating her nearest Congress rival Chintala Venkateswara Reddy by a margin of 46,488 votes.
