UP legislator shot dead

Nirbhay Pal Sharma, a Bharatiya Janata Party legislator from Sarsawan, was shot dead by some unknown assailants at his residence in Saharanpur district of Uttar Pradesh in the wee hours of Monday.

According to an official spokesman in Lucknow, some armed assailants barged into Sharma's house and opened fire at him killing him on the spot. A manhunt for the assassins had been launched, he added.

Chief Minister Rajnath Singh and state BJP president Kalraj Misra have rushed to Saharanpur following the incident.

Details of the incident are awaited.
