At 1528 hours IST, Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee faxed this letter to Railways Minister Mamata Banerjee, requesting her to withdraw her resignation.

Dear Mamataji,

Please refer to our telephonic conversation on October 4 as well as today regarding the hike in the prices of kerosene, LPG and other petroleum products announced recently by the Government.

I fully share your concerns and sentiments about the effect of the price hike on the common people. Even though the Government has tried to minimise the burden of the price increase on the consumers, it cannot be disputed that the hike does cause hardship to the common citizens. We are closely watching the trends in international oil prices. I assure you that the entire issue will be given a re-look and appropriate action taken after I return from Mumbai subsequent to my knee surgery.

I would like to express my heartfelt sympathies to the large number of people who are affected by the recent floods in Bengal.

I would also like to take this opportunity to convey my warm felicitations to the people of Bengal on the joyous occasion of Durga Puja.
