Emissary Gopal set for 'final' mission

Nakkeeran editor R Raja Gopal is all set to leave for the forest on his fifth attempt to negotiate the release of Kannada film star Rajakumar and two others held hostage by forest brigand Veerappan, but he was yet to receive a green signal from the latter.

Nakkeeran associate editor A Kamaraj told United News of India that there were indications that his boss would get the signal and embark on his mission soon.

"Mr Gopal will leave as soon as he receives a signal, but the possibility of leaving tonight is less," Kamaraj said.

Denying reports that Gopal had already left for Erode to receive a message from the bandit and proceed to the forest, he said the emissary was still in Madras.

Indicating that this could be Gopal's final mission, Kamaraj said that this time the emissary could not afford to return empty-handed. Even if the hostages were not freed immediately, he would have to stay in the forest till he secured their release, he said, referring to the growing criticism of the missions.

Gopal had had to abruptly end his fourth mission and return to Madras on September 30 following the escape of Nagappa, one of the hostages.
