MiG 21 crashes near Bikaner

Kamla Bora in Jaipur

A MiG 21 fighter plane of the Indian Air Force crashed near Bikaner in the Thar desert in Rajasthan on Friday killing its pilot and a woman on the ground.

The plane was on a regular sortie when its engine developed a technical snag after it took off from the Naal Air Base. The aircraft fell on a cluster of houses in village Dingsari, reports reaching the state police headquarters in Jaipur said.

While Sq. Leader Mohan Kumar, who was piloting the plane, died in the crash after failing to eject out in time, an 18-year-old woman Chotu Kanwar died on the spot while two others - Hukam Kanwar and Birju Kanwar- were injured, police said.

A total of 18 houses were damaged when the plane fell on them with great force. Four of the houses were completely destroyed.

The injured women have been rushed to Bikaner and admitted to a hospital. The body of the woman who died was handed over to her relatives after a post-mortem.

Senior police officials from Bikaner rushed to the accident site immediately after receiving information about the crash.

IAF personnel also reached the spot.

They body of the dead pilot is in the custody of the IAF.
