Cyclonic storm intensifies, coastal AP put on alert

Under its influence, heavy to very heavy rainfall was likely in the coastal districts of Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, East Godavari, West Godavari, Krishna, Nellore, Prakasam and Guntur in the next 48 hours.

"We are closely monitoring the situation and collectors in coastal region have been alerted to take all possible precautionary measures," state Revenue Minister P Ashok Gajapathiraju told reporters in Hyderabad.

Fishermen in coastal region had been advised not to venture into sea and a central control room, manned by two senior Indian Administrative Service officers, has been set up in Hyderabad to monitor the situation, he said.

The cyclonic storm was likely to intensify further and move in the north-western direction and, under its influence, gales moving at speeds of 65 to 75 km/hour were likely to hit the state all along the coast, the minister said quoting a report of the weather office.

Earlier, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu reviewed the situation and instructed district collectors to be alert and take necessary precautionary measures.
