Francisco Sardinha refuses to step down

Goa Chief Minister Francisco Sardinha on Sunday said he would not step down in the wake of the political crisis that arose following the Bharatiya Janata Party's decision to walkout of the coalition saying that he would prove his majority on the floor of the state assembly.

"I am not resigning. We have the requisite majority and will prove it in the state assembly," he told reporters in Panjim on his return from a foreign tour of Australia on Sunday afternoon.

Stating that he had already got in touch with all concerned, Sardinha said he was confident that his government would tide over the present crisis.

Sardinha said he would work out a strategy to prove his majority after consulting his party colleagues who, he said, were all united behind him.

To a question about the possibility of his return to the Congress, the chief minister quipped, "Am I running a private business? I have to discuss all aspects with my colleagues before taking any decision."
