PM discharged, leaves for Delhi

Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who underwent a knee replacement surgery on October ten, was discharged from Bombay's Breach Candy Hospital at around 1400 hours on Sunday afternoon.

Vajpayee, after being discharged, left for the Chhatrapati Shivaji airport from where will fly back to the capital by a special Indian Air Force aircraft.

Dr Farooque Udwadia and Dr Nandu Laud, who constantly monitored the progress of the prime minister after the operation, are satisfied with his recovery and on Saturday, after the necessary health check-up, declared that the prime minister is completely fit for being discharged on Sunday.

"He is walking up and down the corridor of the hospital and his vital signs was normal. He is by and large pain free and can now flex his knee satisfactorily,'' they added.

According to hospital sources, the prime minister's surgical wound is clean. He is able to walk normally but has been advised to use the walker for some more time as a precautionary measure. He will continue with the physiotherapy exercises for some more days after returning to the capital.

From day one after the operation, Vajpayee had begun monitoring national and international developments. He was reading newspapers and magazines as well as watching television to keep up with the latest developments. Even from the hospital, he had begun attending to important official business and went through important files.

In a thanksgiving gesture, he will send signed photographs and courtesy letters to all those who wished him speedy recovery after his surgery.

Vajpayee's personal assistant for the last 40 years, Shiv Kumar informed that the prime minister believes that his fast recovery was due to the prayers and greetings of millions of his well-wishers from across the country and abroad, including children, who sent him messages through e-mail, telegram, fax and letters. Even the nurses in the hospital had organised mass prayers wishing him speedy recovery.

Before leaving, the prime minister thanked the hospital staff and also expressed his gratitude to the media.

The prime minister also greeted Bombayites on the occasion of Diwali. In his message, he said, "I wanted to celebrate Diwali with the people of Bombay, but due to important work, I have to leave the city before Diwali."
