Rajnath says he was not being made a scapegoat

He said if incumbent Ram Prakash Gupta had not decided to quit, there was no need for the party high command to effect a change in the chief ministership.

Singh, who had an hour-long one-to-one meeting with Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in New Delhi soon after he was named by the party high command to replace Gupta, said, "You cannot compare Uttar Pradesh with Delhi."

The BJP legislature party is likely to meet at 1100 hours on Wednesday in Lucknow to elect him as its leader.

Asked about his priorities, Singh said he would lay emphasis on further improving the law and order situation in the state. "I am not going to perform miracles in UP but will try to improve the situation," he said.

To a question if the BJP was likely to suffer a setback at the hustings, he said, "BJP was never in a bad situation in the state nor will it be in future."
