Bodies of 12 of the 26 drowned recovered

Divers of the state police and the military are working round-the-clock to recover the remaining bodies.

While nine bodies were recovered on Saturday, three had been recovered on Friday.

The tractor-trolley has also been recovered.

Twenty-six members of a family, on their way to a pilgrimage, were drowned when the tractor trolley in which they were travelling fell into a canal, about 100 kilometres from Nainital, on Thursday night, police in Khatima (Uttar Pradesh) had said on Friday.

In all, 37 members of the family from Mailani village in Lakhimpur Kheri were on their way to Nanakmata shrine in the neighbouring Udhamsingh Nagar district when the accident occurred, they had said.

News of the accident reached the district headquarters four hours late as the battery of the wireless set kept in the nearby Jhankaiyya police post was reportedly 'discharged'.

On receiving the information, the district magistrate ordered that the release of water from the Sharda barrage into the canal be stopped. However, a faulty regulator resulted in the continued release of water till late Friday evening.

A local villager, who was sleeping nearby, heard the noise of the trolley falling into the river and rushed to help. He brought eleven people out of the water.
