UP police given free hand to control crime

The chief minister on Monday held a high level meeting with senior police officials of the state and asked them to fulfil his promise of bring crime down within 15 days.

Addressing a press conference in Lucknow, state Director General of Police M C Dwivedi said the chief minister clearly directed the police officials to take action against the guilty, irrespective of his post and position.

Dwivedi said, "We have already prepared a list of around 100 notorious criminals against whom action would be initiated. A special drive was launched on October 16 and it is likely to continue till November 15."

Dwivedi said senior police officials would review on Tuesday the ongoing police drive against criminals, and if necessary, it might be stepped up.

He said the strict preventive action against wanted criminals, mafias, kidnappers and other criminals had begun yielding results in some districts.

The new chief minister has also issued strict instructions to put an end to the carrying of arms, particularly by political activists and small-time gangsters.

Dwivedi, however, added that officers of the rank of Deputy Inspector General and Zonal IG had been directed to monitor the drive to ensure that innocent persons were not harassed.

Announcing that the police would soon launch a drive against unauthorised use of blinkers on vehicles, he said none would be spared under this drive.
