Angry crowds manhandle Gujarat ministers, damage their cars

Police intervened to rescue the ministers and escorted them to a helipad, where they wanted to rush to see Union Home Minister Lal Krishna Advani off.

However, this did not prevent the angry mob from damaging some VIP cars, turning a car upside down by the roadside and setting another ablaze.

The ugly scenes began soon after the function was over at about 1400 hours when BJP leaders and VIPs rushed to their cars. The unprecedented crowd and horn-blowing vehicles led to a traffic jam up to ten kilometres long on the road leading to the dam site.

The VIPs' honking cars tried to cut through the thick crowds, which triggered angry protests.

The BJP government had organised the state-level function on a grand scale and brought in more than 3,000 state transport undertaking buses to ferry the people free of cost to the dam site.
