25 killed in UP building collapseSharat Pradhan in Lucknow Twenty-five labourers were killed and three others are in a serious condition following a building collapse in Tundla town in Ferozabad district, near Agra, on Saturday. According to Uttar Pradesh principal home secretary V K Mittal, "The labourers were demolishing an old structure of the Tundla railway locomotive workshop, when it caved in suddenly." He said, "Three labourers were killed when a portion of the building collapsed suddenly. The others were killed when the remaining portion collapsed shortly after." Ferozabad superintendent of police Rajan Srivastava told rediff.com over the telephone, "The incident occurred at 0940 hours IST as workers got down to demolishing the century-old structure." He said, "Rain over the past few days perhaps further weakened the building, which collapsed after a few hammer blows." Srivastava maintained that rescue operations were on. The railway authorities have been restrained from carrying out further demolition work at the site. According to a railway spokesman, officials from the Northern Railway headquarters and railway board in New Delhi have gone to the site. The railways have announced compensation to the next of kin of those killed and injured. EARLIER REPORT
