Heavy rain has claimed 21 lives in Uttar Pradesh during the last 24 hours on Saturday, taking the toll this week to 74.

Reports received at the state headquarters in Lucknow said 11 people had died in Kaushambi district, three in Etawah, two each in Ghazipur and Etah and one in Sultanpur, in wall collapses.

The weather department has reported light to heavy rain in almost the entire state, especially Gorakhpur, Varanasi, Faizabad and Allahabad divisions, where the monsoon has been active.

It said Chandradeep ghat received eight cm of rain, while Ayodhya and Allahabad recorded seven cm, Varanasi and Ghazipur six cm and Sultanpur four cm.

The Ghagra river was flowing above the red mark at Elginbridge, Ayodhya and Turtipar although other major rivers like the Ganga, Yamuna and Sia were still below the danger mark.

The weather office has forecast light to heavy rain in Gorakhpur, Faizabad, Kanpur, Lucknow and Varanasi divisions.
