Article 356 cannot be resorted to in Bengal: Jyoti BasuWest Bengal Chief Minister Jyoti Basu on Tuesday said it would never be possible for the Centre to invoke the provisions of Article 356 of the Constitution in the state under any circumstances. "The Centre cannot invoke Article 356 in our state even if the railway minister resigns to press for such a demand,'' Basu told reporters in Calcutta. "What can I do if she resigns? It's her personal business. She believes in violent activities and she is promoting violence even after becoming a Central minister,'' Basu said. Basu disagreed with former Union home minister and Communist Party of India-Marxist Party of India Member of Parliament Indrajit Gupta that both the Trinamul Congress and the CPI (Marxist) are responsible for the political violence in the state. "I don't agree with him. Thousands of people, who were driven out, are now returning to their homes," he added. UNI
