Bengal flood toll goes up to 45

E-Mail this report to a friend

At least 45 people were killed and about 10 million marooned in devastating floods in eight districts of West Bengal as army jawans continued a grim battle for the fourth day on Thursday to carry out rescue and relief operations.

Official sources said in Calcutta that 22 people were killed in the worst affected Birbhum district, while 12 people were killed in Bardhaman district. Three people each were killed in Murshidabad and Nadia districts, two each in north Dinajpur and Bankura districts and one in Howrah. Most deaths occurred in house collapses triggered by incessant rains for four days.

Sources said Indian Air Force helicopters could not air-drop food packets because of inclement weather.
