Jana Krishnamoorthy rules out President's rule in Bengal

There is no possibility of President's rule being imposed in West Bengal even though law and order in the state has broken down, Bharatiya Janata Party vice-president K Jana Krishnamoorthy said on Monday.

Krishnamoorthy told reporters in Madras that since the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance did not have a majority in the Rajya Sabha, imposition of President's rule could not be ratified unless the Congress backed the Centre.

There were informal contacts with the Congress on getting its support for central intervention, he added. The West Bengal unit of the party had already recommended to its high command that central rule was needed in the state, he pointed out.

The BJP politician said law and order had become worse in Midnapore and neighbouring districts and opposition leaders and cadres were being killed by goons of the ruling Communist Party of India, Marxist, with the backing of the police.

Krishnamoorthy accused West Bengal Chief Minister Jyoti Basu of using intemperate language against Union Home Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani in his communication to him on the issue.

Basu need not respect Advani as an individual, but he had to observe certain norms in a democratic federal set-up, he said.
