NDA's public rally in Bombay cancelled

Our Correspondent in Bombay

The National Democratic Front has cancelled its proposed rally in Bombay to explain its stand on the defence deals expose.

The April 7 rally was to be addressed by Prime Minister A B Vajpayee and Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray.

The prime minister will, however, visit the city on April 8 to attend a function.

However, Bharatiya Janata Party spokesperson Atul Bhatkalkar told rediff.com, "The rally was never scheduled and therefore there is no question of it being cancelled."

The prime minister had stated that the NDA would hold rallies across the country to explain the government's stand after the Tehelkaepisode and Bombay was listed as one of the venues.

Political observers feel the rally was cancelled because Thackeray had come out openly against some officials of the Prime Minister's Office and had demanded the dismissal of the prime minister's Principal Secretary Brajesh Mishra, Officer on Special Duty N K Singh and Ranjan Bhattacharya, Vajpayee's foster son-in-law.

Other BJP sources said that the rally had been cancelled to accommodate Vajpayee's scheduled trip to Iran on April 10.
