Rao deposes before Ayodhya panel

Former prime minister P V Narasimha Rao on Monday deposed before the Liberhan Commission, which is looking into the sequence of events that led to the demolition of the disputed structure at Ayodhya on December 6, 1992.

This was the third time Rao appeared before the commission as a witness. Earlier, his statements were recorded on February 19 and 20.

In his February 19 deposition, the former prime minister had blamed the then Kalyan Singh-led Bharatiya Janata Party government in Uttar Pradesh for the demolition and denied that he and his Congress party wanted the disputed structure to be brought down to prevent the BJP from taking undue political mileage out of the issue.

Asserting that it was essentially the duty of the UP government to save the structure, he had said that he had an impression there were certain inadequacies in the security arrangements made by the state government at the site.

Interestingly, Rao had said that on the Centre's part it was the then home minister S B Chavan who was looking into the matter.
