3 BSF men injured in
Baramulla gun battle

Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar

One militant was killed and three Border Security Force personnel were injured in a fierce gun battle in Sopore in the north Kashmir district of Baramulla on Wednesday evening.

Police sources told rediff.com that the BSF raided Warpora locality in the apple town and were laying a cordon around the houses when they were fired upon by the militants who were hiding there. The militants hurled grenades at the BSF search party.

Three BSF personnel, including a deputy commandant, were injured. They were later moved to a hospital in Srinagar.

The army moved in and sealed Warpora as the militants and the BSF continued to exchange fire for about two hours. The troops then shelled the houses where the militants were hiding.

"We had specific information about the presence of militants in the locality," said BSF spokesman T Acharya. He said condition of a BSF inspector was serious.

Meanwhile, a report from Poonch in Jammu region said four militants died in a gun battle at Tota Gali village on Wednesday afternoon. Police said arms and ammunition were recovered from the spot.
