Three persons looted one million rupees from the city-based Mahesh Cooperative Bank from Dilsukhnagar area in the city, after killing a bank attendant, on Wednesday afternoon.
A top bank official told this correspondent that the incident occurred when the cash box containing Rs one million was being transported from the Shamsheergunj branch in the Old City to Dilsukhnagar branch, about eight km away, at around 1410 hours IST.
The money was being transported in an autorickshaw by a lady officer and an attendant.
When the auto-rickshaw reached the Dilsukhnagar branch, the three persons pounced on the attendant and stabbed him repeatedly. They also pushed the lady officer and dragged the auto-rickshaw driver out of the vehicle.
The lady officer resisted but fell down, while the attendant laid in a pool of blood.
The assailants sped away in the autorickshaw towards Malakpet.
Though the incident took place at a busy spot, nobody came to the rescue of the bank employees. Later, the body of the attendant -- 30-year-old Dattatreya-- was shifted to Osmania General Hospital mortuary for a post-mortem. Lady officer Sarita Joshi was in a dazed state. The auto-rickshaw driver escaped unhurt.
Senior police officials, including deputy inspector-general, Hyderabad range, superintendent of police, Ranga Reddy district, deputy SP Saroornagar and others rushed to the spot. The Saroornagar police registered a case and took up investigations.
Sniffer dogs were pressed into service. The police also sounded an alert and searched for the autorickshaw.
