A sector commander of the Bangladesh Rifles on Thursday said he was trying to contact the Border Security Force top brass to hand over the bodies of Indian securitymen killed in armed clashes between the two sides at Rowmari in Kurigram district.
The clashes on Wednesday had left 18 people dead, of which 16 were BSF personnel.
The sector commander of the BDR, Colonel Enayet, said he was trying to get in touch with his BSF counterpart to hand over the dead bodies, but there was no progress as intermittent firings were continuing when reports last came in.
Col Enayet conceded that in this hot and humid weather, the bodies needed to be cremated fast, but it was impossible due to the prevailing situation.
"Most of the bodies of the BSF men were in BDR custody while some remained scattered in the area and could not be collected because of the ongoing firing," he said.
