Stating there was strong resentment among Indians over the killings, Bajrang Dal chief Surendra Jain warned that it could result in a 'backlash' against the large Bangladeshi population in the capital and elsewhere in the country.
"We are not satisfied with the government's response. BJP feels that any strong action would anger the Muslims. They should remember that national interests are more important than their image," said Jain, who along with VHP president Vishnu Hari Dalmia and other Sangh Parivar leaders, led a demonstration outside the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi.
The Sangh Parivar activists submitted a memorandum to the Bangladeshi High Commissioner in which they demanded among other things punishment to guilty Bangladeshi personnel according to international law, personal apology to the families of each and every Indian jawan killed and repatriation of all illegal Bangladeshi migrants from India.
Emerging from a meeting with High Commissioner Mostafa Farooque Mohammed, the VHP pesident said, "We expressed our strong resentment over the recent incidents to him and demanded proper investigation from the Bangla authorities".
The Bangladeshi envoy assured them of 'proper action' against those found guilty, he said.
The Bangladeshi action, he said, was an affront to the nation's self-respect and would demoralise the troops.
"Mere regret by Dhaka will not do. They will have to court martial all guilty BDR personnel. If they fail to do so, India should retaliate even if it means war," he said.
Demanding deportation of 'over 20 million' illegal Bangladeshi migrants, Jain said the outfit's activists have been directed to identify and inform police of their presence.
In a letter to Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Jain said the government's 'lukewarm response' could also raise doubts about its competence in the minds of the people.
In his letter, the Bajrang Dal's national convener urged Vajpayee not to allow his 'liberal image' be seen as a 'weakness' and demanded that Bangladesh be taught a lesson for its 'misdeeds'.
He also asked the government to direct Dhaka to put an end to anti-India activities of militants and Pakistan's Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) from its soil.
