Ancient Buddha images found in Bengal

Two ancient Buddha images - one dating back to 200 BC and another 800 AD - have recently been found in the Karna Subarna area, near Baharampur, by Additional District Magistrate of Murshidabad district Gurupada Bayen.

Bayen on Wednesday said that during a visit to the area in December last, he had located broken stone idols in the area, ancient capital of King Shasanka who ruled Bengal in the early parts of the 6th century.

Deputy Superintendent of the Archeological Survey of India A K Bandyopadhyay had inspected the area and also the idols in February last.

Later, the ASI expressed its willingness to take the idols for their preservation and display in the Hazarduari museum in the district, Bayen said.
