Two nomads of the Gurjar tribe have been arrested for their alleged role in the demolition of an ancient mosque in Rajasthan's Asind town, 200 km from Jaipur, on July 27, police said.
The duo, identified as Bhawar Lal and Dudha Lal, were named in the report lodged with the police, Inspector General of Police (intelligence) M K Devrajan told Indo-Asian News Service.
A heavy police force has been deployed in the town as a precaution. More than a week after the incident, the situation in the town continues to be tense, said two members of a rights group who have just returned from the area.
"The Muslim community is living in terror as they fear a backlash," said Jasmine, a member of the Peoples' Union for Civil Liberties.
The 16th century mosque, built by emperor Akbar, was pulled down by a group of 300 Hindu nomads, who installed an idol of Lord Hanuman in its place. The mosque had existed within the premises of the Sawai Bhoj temple.
The government defused an Ayodhya-like situation on Tuesday when it persuaded the nomads to remove the idol.
