The 15 Hindus gunned down by militants in Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday were cremated on Sunday amidst protests, even as security forces intensified the hunt for the killers and curfew remained in force in two nearby towns.
The last rites of the dead were performed at Atholi village in Kishtwar tehsil in the presence of hundreds of mourners.
As shutdowns were enforced in various parts of Doda district, curfew, imposed in Kishtwar and Baderwah towns following the massacre to prevent possible outbreak of communal violence, continued, a government spokesman said.
He said the Rashtriya Rifle troops and Special Task Force of the state police have stepped up operations to trace the militants responsible for the killings.
One company of the Central Reserve Police Force has moved to Atholi-Paddar-Sharoti Dhar area to provide security to villagers who move to meadows with their cattle in the summer, he said.
