Anita Sen, one of the prime accused in the child adoption racket that rocked Andhra Pradesh four months ago, has filed a petition before the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), seeking compensation of Rs 10 million from the state government for her 'illegal' detention.
Fifty-four-year-old Anita Sen is the executive director of 'Precious Moments', an unrecognised adoption home at Miyapur on the outskirts of Hyderabad.
She is one of the eight accused in the criminal case filed by the Crime Investigation Department (CID) after as many as 61 infants and children were rescued from the orphanage on April 26 this year.
Anita Sen, her associate Sarita and others were charged under Sections 120 (B), 420, 468, 471, 363, 373, 372, 175, 188, 342, 343 and 211 of the Indian Penal Code.
In a statement, Anita Sen's counsel said that she has sought compensation for ill-treatment and mental agony following the developments in connection with her orphanage 'Precious Moments' in April this year.
Sen also pleaded that the NHRC direct the state government and the CID to desist from interfering with her personal liberty and to allow her to run her institution by restoring all the children who were 'illegally shifted' by the Child and Women Welfare Department.
She urged the NHRC to depute a team to inquire into the case and suspend the investigation and prosecution initiated against her by the state police. She also sought prosecution of the CWWD commissioner and other officials concerned.
Sen complained to the NHRC that her husband and senior IPS officer Swaranjit Sen was relieved of his post of Additional DG (Recruitment, Welfare and Sports) in May and he was still awaiting a posting.
She sought a direction for his promotion as Director-General of Police (DGP), which is due as per his seniority.
Her petition came up before NHRC member Sujata Manohar for hearing on August 3. Manohar, however, referred the case for hearing by the full bench of the NHRC, presided over by Chairman Justice J S Verma, at a later date.
Sen had surrendered in the ninth metropolitan magistrate's court in Hyderabad on May 19 after the government announced a reward of Rs 500,000 for clues leading to her whereabouts.
She was released on bail on July 24 after spending 67 days in the Chanchalguda women's prison.
When NHRC chairman J S Verma visited the prison to attend a programme some time back, she had complained to him about 'ill-treatment' during her stay in the jail. She petitioned the NHRC after being told to file a formal complaint.
