13 die after taking herbal medicine in AP

At least 13 villagers died and several others fell ill after consuming a herbal medicine allegedly distributed by some quacks during a recent carnival at Edupayala village in Medak district of Andhra Pradesh.

The deaths occurred during the last fortnight, police said on Sunday.

On Saturday, two bodies were exhumed and post-mortem reports revealed that the victims had consumed a herbal medicine, which was allegedly distributed by quacks at the carnival about two weeks ago, the police said.

Villagers of Yellanur, Gollapalli, Kalivemula, Nandigama and Eswarapuram had consumed the medicine, they said.

The police arrested two quacks in this connection on Saturday

District medical and health officer have set up epidemic cells at the villages to treat the patients.
