Nizam's jewels to be displayed in Hyderabad

Syed Amin Jafri in Hyderabad

Exquisite jewellery and precious stones belonging to the Nizam would be on display in the erstwhile ruler's home city of Hyderabad for six weeks from November this year.

The citizens of Hyderabad as well as tourists would have the opportunity to witness the famed collection at the Salar Jung Museum.

Disclosing this to newsmen on Friday, Union Minister for Tourism Anant Kumar said that extraordinary security arrangements would be made for the exhibition.

The priceless jewellery, sold to the Indian government for Rs 2.18 billion, is being put on public display for the first time in the country at National Museum in Delhi for six weeks from August 29 to October 15.

The 173-item collection is worth anywhere between Rs 30 billion to Rs 100 billion now.

Incidentally, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has written seven letters to Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee, staking the state's claim to the collection.
