Doctors treating AIDS patients infected

Four doctors in two medical colleges of Uttar Pradesh were infected with the HIV virus, which causes the dreaded AIDS disease, during treatment of patients, a top official said on Wednesday.

Project Director of the Uttar Pradesh AIDS Control Society, Bachittar Singh, however, added that the doctors were immediately administered post-exposure profilaxis and were now out of danger.

"Four doctors, two each from the Kanpur Medical College and King George's Medical College, were infected with the disease during treatment of AIDS patients, but were immediately treated at the government's expense," Singh said.

He said counselling facilities had been provided for the doctors and one specialist physician had been appointed as infection control officer.

The government would bear all expenses of the treatment of doctors and other health workers working with AIDS patients, he added.

Officers had been directed to keep three doses of post-exposure profilaxis round-the-clock for doctors attending on AIDS patients, Singh said.

The anti-retroviral, if administered to a person within 72 hours of being infected with the virus, worked as a deterrent to HIV-AIDS infection, he said.
