Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday exuded confidence that Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's efforts to resolve the Ayodhya issue before March 12 next year would yield fruitful results.
Singh said he would, if and when directed by the prime minister, contribute his mite to help resolve the tangle.
In reply to a question, the chief minister said efforts were afoot to resolve the issue, notwithstanding doubts expressed in certain quarters.
Singh reiterated that elections to the Uttar Pradesh Assembly would be held in February-March next year and ruled out any possibility of advancing the poll schedule.
He also ruled out the possibility of dissolving the assembly saying his government enjoyed a comfortable majority in the house, which he could prove if the opposition dared to bring a no-confidence motion.
He said there had been a marked improvement in the law and order situation in the state following a crackdown on mafia elements and liquidation of several hardcore criminals.
A sustained drive was underway to nab Inter-Service Intelligence agents active in the state, he said, adding a number of militants belonging to different outfits like the Lashkar-e-Tayiba and Jaish-e-Mohammad were killed.
The aim of the militants was to target the make-shift temple at Ayodhya and create disturbances in the state, Singh said.
A special vigil was being maintained at Ayodhya, Kashi and Mathura and security had been stepped up to foil the militants' nefarious designs, he said.
