Senior party leaders had taken the decision at an informal meeting in the second week of August and it was duly communicated to Moopanar, who had been admitted to the Sri Ramachandra Medical College hospital, the sources said.
The decision was meant to ease the burden on Moopanar in view of his failing health, they said.
The TMC's general council would soon be convened to ratify the decision, the sources added.
Moopanar, who had sacked all the party office bearers in June last, had not made any new appointments since then, they said.
