Over 1200 additional armed personnel were deployed on Thursday in and around the temple town of Ayodhya to keep a strict vigil and to prevent any untoward incident on the ninth anniversary of the demolition of the 16th century Babri mosque.
The additional police force includes 10 officers of the rank of additional superintendent of police and 22 deputy superintendents of police.
In what has now become common practice, the administration has banned any kind of demonstration even as Hindu fundamentalist organisations have plans to celebrate what they call Vijay diwas (victory day) while the Babri Masjid Action Committee (BMAC), promoted by Muslims, will observe a 'black day'.
Principal Home Secretary Naresh Dayal said, "Prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code has been enforced. The order disallows assembly of four or more persons in a public place."
"We are confident of preventing any untoward incident," District Magistrate B P Mishra told rediff.com over telephone. Security checks were being carried out at all entry points to the town, he said.
