PM assured acquired land in Ayodhya will be given to VHP: Singhal

Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) president Ashok Singhal claimed on Wednesday that Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee has assured him that the acquired land in Ayodhya (Uttar Pradesh) would be handed over to it for the construction of Ram temple.

However, in New Delhi, there was no confirmation of this claim from the Prime Minister's Office.

Addressing a press conference at Karsewakpuram in Ayodhya, Singhal said the central government would give all the land, except the 80 feet by 40 feet area on which the disputed structure had existed before its demolition on December 6, 1992.

The rest of the 67.5-acre land in the acquired area was un-disputed and the government can hand it over to VHP, he said.

Singhal and president of the Ramjanma Bhoomi Nyas Mahant Ram Chandra Paramhans had met the prime minister recently in this connection.

Replying to a question, Singhal claimed the Sunni Waqf Board had withdrawn its claim on the rest of the acquired land in 1996, which was shown as a graveyard.

Answering another question, Singhal said the Centre would transfer the land before March 12 next year but construction of the temple would commence only on the direction of the Sant samaj (society of monks) on an auspicious day.

The deity of Lord Ram will be shifted temporarily to facilitate construction work, he said.

Singhal said he had not violated any Supreme Court order by entering the makeshift temple on October 1 last as there was no directive from the apex court for maintenance of status quo at that place.

Singhal said he had met several MPs, including Union ministers in New Delhi last week, to explain the situation in Ayodhya and claimed to have got a 'good response" from AIADMK leader J Jayalalithaa and Union Agriculture Minister Ajit Singh.

Singhal regretted that opposition MPs paid little heed to VHP's views on the Ayodhya issue.
