LS adjourns sine die two days ahead of schedule

Lok Sabha was on Wednesday adjourned sine die, two days ahead of schedule, with a firm resolve to fight terrorism even as the Speaker set up a panel to oversee implementation of stepped up security in Parliament in the aftermath of the terrorist attack.

While adjourning the House, Speaker G M C Balayogi said he would constitute a steering committee of officials and an advisory group of MPs for ensuring speedy implementation of the recommendations contained in a report submitted recently by an expert group on security.

The group, which had begun work on October one, comprised experts from the Delhi police, Special Protection Group, Intelligence Bureau and personnel in charge of security in Parliament.

After the October one terrorist attack on the Jammu and Kashmir assembly in Srinagar, the Speaker said he had personally conducted field inspections of the Parliament complex along with officials and taken all necessary steps to strengthen security.

Referring to the attack, Balayogi said, "All of us realise the magnitude and seriousness of the challenge posed to the nation's unity and integrity by the terrorists and their collaborators."

"That makes our resolve all the more strong to make safe and secure what the terrorists were trying to destroy - in this case, Parliament of India, which is the epitome of the largest working democracy in the world," he said.

"We take it as not merely an attack on the most important institution in the country, but as an attack on our political system, our ethos and values and on our very way of life."

Paying glowing tributes to those who laid down their lives 'in their attempt to save the ultimate symbol of Indian democracy', Balayogi said, "This attack on the nation and its elected leadership was defeated by the timely and courageous action of our security forces belonging to the CRPF, Delhi Police, ITBP and, of course, the officers of Parliament's Watch and Ward Staff."

Regarding the proceedings of the House which commenced on November 19, he said the Lower House had a total of 21 sittings spread over 80 hours during which several important financial, legislative and other business was transacted.

Stating that 11 bills were approved by the Lok Sabha and discussions on major issues like Ayodhya, farmers' problems and the Doha WTO conference were held, he said serious efforts were made for ensuring orderly conduct of the House by restraining members from entering the well.

Later, talking to reporters, he said leaders of parties agreed 'that it will be in the fitness of things to conclude our last session of this year in a spirit of unanimity and national consensus'.
