As many as 29 left-wing extremists belonging to outlawed People's War Group and Janashakti group surrendered before the Director General of Police on Wednesday afternoon.
Those surrendered included 27 from the PWG and two from Janashakti group.
They were members of the so-called platoons of the People's Guerrilla Army, special action teams and local guerrilla squads, Director General of Police H J Dora told mediapersons.
The DGP said rigours of underground life, fear of getting killed in encounters with police parties, lack of food and rest had forced these cadres to come out of the dalams (armed squads) and platoons.
"These cadres clearly understood that the ideology of PWG and its actions are totally dichotomous and contradictory. Counselling by district police helped them to find a channel for surrendering before the authorities," he added.
Dora said that the surrendered extremists, including five women, had been in the PWG as underground cadres for a period ranging from six months to over 10 years.
Most of the cadres had been involved in cases of assault, murders, destruction of government properties, snatching of ballot boxes and exchanges of fire with the police.
As many as 689 PWG and other left-wing extremists surrendered before the police in the state so far this year, he pointed out.
Those who surrendered on Wednesday included Rudrangi Sudhakar alias Bellam (36) along with his wife Subhadra (27).
Sudhakar, who carried a reward of Rs 300,000 on head, was a senior party cadre involved in PWG activities since 1983.
Eighteen cadres who surrendered on Wednesdau were from Warangal district, eight from Adilabad and three from Karimnagar district.
