Syed Amin Jafri in Hyderabad
The Vijayawada City police have launched a hunt for a deputy superintendent of police who has been booked in a dowry harassment case.
The police registered the case against G Amarnath under section 498(A) of the Indian Penal Code and sections 3 and 4 of the Dowry Prohibition Act for harassing his wife and subjecting her to cruelty in his quest for more dowry.
His wife, Lurdh Mary, lodged the complaint at the Gannavaram police station, alleging that she was assaulted on Christmas morning.
Amarnath, who was posted in the criminal investigation department at Mahbubnagar, went missing after the police registered the case.
In her complaint, Lurdh Mary alleged that Amarnath used to torture and beat her up regularly after marriage in 1993. Unable to bear the pain, she had returned to her parents at Gannavaram a few days ago.
Earlier too, Mary had lodged a complaint with the Khairatabad police in Hyderabad accusing Amarnath of suspecting her fidelity and harassing her. Amarnath was placed under suspension then, but reinstated later. The couple has two children.
