UP elections on February 14, 18, 21

The assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh will be held on February 14,18 and 21 next, the Election Commission announced on Wednesday

While the assembly elections in Punjab will be held on February 13, they will be held in Uttaranchal on February 14, Chief Election Commissioner J M Lyngdoh told reporters in New Delhi.

Lyngdoh said the elections in Manipur would be held on February 14 and 21.

The counting of votes in all the states will be undertaken on February 24, Lyngdoh said.

By-elections to six Lok Sabha constituencies -- one each in Assam, Jammu and Kashmir, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Tripura -- will take place on February 21, he said.

By-elections to six assembly seats -- three in Tamil Nadu and one each in Haryana, Maharashtra and Rajasthan -- will be conducted on the same day, he said.

The six Lok Sabha constituencies going to polls are Kaliabor (Assam), Jammu (J&K), Kanakapura (Karnataka), Guna (Madhya Pradesh), Tripura West (Tripura) and Mirzapur (Uttar Pradesh).

The six assembly seats where by-elections will be held are: Yamunanagar (Haryana), Arvi (Maharashtra), Ajmer West (Rajasthan) and Saidapat, Vaniyambadi and Andipatti (all in Tamil Nadu).

Lyngdoh said electronic voting machines will used in all assembly constituencies in Punjab, Uttaranchal and Uttar Pradesh. These machines will be introduced in only six constituencies of Manipur, he said.

Lyngdoh said the model code of conduct had come into force from Wednesday in all the states witnessing the assembly polls and the districts in those states where Lok Sabha and assembly bye-elections are being held.

He said 400 observers were being deputed to oversee the process of elections.

Asked whether the elections would be re-scheduled if there was confrontation on the international border, he said, "As an Indian citizen, who reads newspapers, I think there is going to be no war. But when the time comes, we will see."
