Ties between the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the Tamil Maanila Congress are on the brink of collapse. The AIADMK has named Dr V Mythereyan, its doctor's wing president, as its candidate for the by-election to the Rajya Sabha to fill up the vacancy caused by the death of TMC president G K Moopanar.
AIADMK chief Jayalalithaa said in a statement in Chennai on Thursday that the party parliamentary board had decided to contest the seat and named Mythereyan its nominee.
TMC president G K Vasan had told reporters on Wednesday that the alliance between his party and the AIADMK continued.
TMC sources termed the AIADMK's decision as a "setback" to the "friendly ties" between the two parties.
Mythereyan had quit the Bharatiya Janata Party after it decided to align with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam for the 1999 Lok Sabha polls.
