1 killed, 7 injured as police break up Sikh protest

One person was killed and seven others injured when security forces opened fire to disperse an unruly Sikh mob, which attempted to damage a mosque at Narwal, in the curfew-bound Jammu city Monday morning.

The injured have been rushed to a nearby hospital and tension has gripped the Jammu city.

Army has been called out in Jammu.

Police sources said nearly 500 Sikhs took to the streets in Nanaknagar locality in Jammu and to protest against the killings of six members of the community at Mehjoor Nagar in the city on Saturday evening.

Angry protestors torched two police vehicles and indulged in heavy stone-pelting. The police used teargas and batons to disperse them.

Security in the entire Nanaknagar and Gandhinagar areas has been further beefed up for strict enforcement of curfew.

Meanwhile, curfew is continuing in the areas falling under nine police stations in the summer capital of Srinagar.

A central team led by Chemicals and Fertilisers Minister Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa will shortly be arriving in the city to take stock of the situation.

Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah, who has arrived in Srinagar from Jammu, reviewed the situation in the valley with senior officials in the administration.
